Acne Treatment

The standard approach for treating acne is multi-drug therapy.
The combination of erythromycin and benzoyl peroxide has proven to be well tolerated and effective topical treatment for acne vulgaris.
Multicenter randomised study in 223 patients with moderate to moderately severe acne who received erythromycin /5% benzoyl peroxide or matching vehicle control for 8 weeks.

Investigators found the combination was more effective for pustular and papular lesions than any of the other treatments

  1. High efficacy in pustular and papular lesions.
  2. Fast acting.
  3. Dual antimicrobial therapy.
  4. Anti-inflammatory.
  5. Minimize the antimicrobial resistance.
  6. Improve patient satisfaction.
Pharmacology:

Erythromycin is a bacteriostatic macrolide antibiotic, but it is a bactericidal in high concentration.

Its effect bases on the inhibition of bacterial protein synthesis.
Although the mechanism by which topical erythromycin acts in reducing inflammatory lesions of acne vulgaris is unknown, it is may be due to its antibiotic action (it works against most G +ve & G –ve microorganisms)

Indication:

Topical control of acne vulgaris particularly inflammatory types with papules & pustules
The topical treatment with erythromycin as alternative to systemic treatment

Clinical trials the authors Fulton & Pablo (1974) report :- an improvement of acne after topical application of erythromycin as well as a reduced concentration of free fatty acids in the skin surface lipids.

Moreover aknemycin oint emulsified the sebum in the acne & remove it from the duct of the sebaceous gland.

Pharmacokinetics:
Absorption
After using Akne-mycin 2% sol. to large areas of forehead, back, shoulder and upper arm.
Blood samples have been taken before 2 & 4 weeks after. No erythromycin was detected in the serum 0.3 ug/ml.
Aknemycin 2% has significant reduction effect in the propionibacterium acnes as well as the number of total germs.
 
Toxicology
Erythromycin is considered one of the best tolerated antibiotics used in present.
Erythromycin is a unique non sensitizing antibiotic after topical application.

Aknemycin oint 2% Pack. 15g oint
For dry sensitive skin
Indication of
Acne vulgaris all forms particularly inflammatory forms with papules & pustules.
Topical antibiotic for any superficial wounds or abrasions.
 
Aknemycin sol 2% in ethanol Pack. Bottle of 25 ml with applicator
For oily skin
Note: Ethanol inforce the antibact. action of erythromycin
Indication of
Acne vulgaris all forms particularly inflammatory forms with papules & pustules.
Topical antibiotic after shave as a prophylactic to any dermatological infection.
Efficacy:

Highly effective against propionibacter acnes & all other microorganisms such as:
Staphylococci - streptococci

Safety:

Well tolerated considered the best tolerated antibiotic.

Contraindications:

Hypersensitivity to erythromycin or to any component of these product.

Precautions:

for external use only. Keep away from eyes, nose, mouth & other mucous membranes.
Super infection: Use of antibiotics (especially prolonged or repeated therapy) may result in bacterial or fungal overgrowth of non susceptible organisms.

Adverse reactions:

Erythema, desquamation, burning sensation rarely.

Patient information:

Wash, rinse and dry affected areas before application.

 
Administration and Dosage:

Apply morning & evening to affected areas before applying, wash, rinse & dry all areas to be treated.
