Miconazole is a broad spectrum fungicidal
drug as it acts against most Dermatophyte
species, Candida species and Pityriasis versicolor.
Bactericidal action against Staphylococci.
& Streptococci (Gram positive bacteria)
Mechanism
of Action
Inhibition of ergosterol biosynthesis,
which leads to altering the cell wall permeability
and loss of essential intracellular elements.
Inhibition of oxidative and per-oxidative
enzyme activity leading to fungal cell necrosis
& death due to accumulation of toxic concentrations
of hydrogen peroxide.
Pharmacokinetics
No reports indicate that Miconazole nitrate
is absorbed systemically following application
to intact skin.
Negligible traces of miconazole are absorbed
and metabolized in the liver into inactive
metabolites, then excreted in urine and feces.
