On cholesterol gallstones:
Due to its low potential of forming micelles, Ursochol inhibits the micellar intestinal digestion & absorption of cholesterol thus lowers cholesterol content of hepatic bile secretion & minimizes cholesterol saturation in gallbladder.
Ursochol has the ability of dissolving cholesterol gallstones by reducing cholesterol saturation in gallbladder & through forming more soluble liquid crystals when combined with cholesterol.
In chronic hepatitis and chronic cholestatic liver diseases:
Ursochol chronic administration re-arranges the bile acids composition by becoming its major fraction thus reducing the detergent toxic properties of the hydrophobic bile acids e.g lithocholate, deoxycholate, and chenodeoxy-cholate which increase in concentration in patients with chronic liver disease.
Ursochol has direct hepatocyte cytoprotective effect.
Ursochol increases bile flow.
Ursochol normalizes the hazardous abnormal immune response towards liver cells.
Ursochol normalizes liver function tests; it significantly reduces the elevated liver enzymes e.g. ALT, AST, AP, GGT.
In gastritis due to biliary reflux:
In such conditions Ursochol is found to improve clinical symptoms and endoscopy results as well.
Possible therapeutic effects are through reducing the concentration and consequently the toxic aggressive burden of hydrophobic bile acids on gut mucosa as well as the direct cytoprotective effects of Ursochol.
