Flavonoids :
are a group of naturally occurring compounds
are widely distributed in the vegetable .
are capable of modulating the activity of enzymes and affect many cell system.
are nutrients produced in many plants, when flavonoids are used by the body , they are often referred to as Bioflavonoids .

Bioflavonoids :

are needed for the optimal health of capillaries and proper membrane elasticity of red blood cells
protect us against the oxidative stress which can led to heart disease , cancer and other disease.
The great important of flavonoids lies in their antioxidant and anti-free radical properties.
Flavonoids : act as preventive ,radical scavenging and repair antioxidants.

Posses powerful antioxidant activity :
They act as free radical scavengers and block the undesirable oxidation of fats and other compounds ,which proceed in cycle as a chain react.
The Flavonoids are typical phenolic compounds and act as potent antioxidants ,metal chelators and free radical scavengers
.
They inhibit the oxidative modification of low density lipoproteins
.

The potential advantages of the ability of Flavonoids to reduce the activity of dangerous oxidant including metals such as iron and copper .

The Flavonoids are known to posses Vit. C stabilizing .

Flavonoids are known to affect a large number of enzyme system including protein Kinase C, Protein tyrosine Kinase , phospholipids A- Z

Some of these enzyme systems appear to be critically involved in chronic disease

Flavonoids : Citrus fruit contain a wide variety of flavonoids
Quercetin : one of the most common and abundant Flavonoids ,occur bound to sugars in a form Known as rutin.
Quercetin is found in high amount in common food stuffs such as apples , onions and tea.
Hesperidin and naringin are some of the commonly occurring citrus Flavonoids

Potential
Effects of Flavonoids
Analgesic
Hesperidin
Antiallergic
Khellin - Quercetin
Antidiabetic
Quercetin
Anticancer
Catchin – Quercetin - Rutinnn
Anti-inflammatory
Quercetin-Myricetin-Nepetin-D glucoside
Antispasmotic
Apigenin-Catechin-Flavone -Quercetin
Flavonoids : Antiallergic properties :-
inhibit enzymes that increase histamine release from mast cells and basophiles : cyclic AMP Phosphodiesterase and calcium dependent.
Vascular protection by flavonoids :
The protection of the capillary wall was mediated through an increasing in the endothelium barrier effect through a stabilization of membrane phospholipids .
Anti-inflammatory activity :
Flavonoids were demonstrated as possessing in vivo anti-inflammatory properties.
Flavonoids had good anti-inflammatory activity without the ulcerogenic side effect .
flavonoids such as myricetin , quercetin blocked both the cyclooxygenase and lipooxygenase pathway at relative high concentration.
Gastro-intestinal activity :
Flavonoids were able to protect the gastric mucosa against a variety of ulcerogenic agents.
The mechanism of action remains unclear , it was proposed that it influences the formation and metabolism of PG in the gastric mucosa.
Flavonoids , flavone , flavanone and Quercetin :
inhibited H. pylori growth and the formation of acid by parietal cells in response to stimulation by histamine and dibutyryl cyclic AMP .
